Avoiding the Wall:

Top 4 Cycling Tips to Avoid Premature Fatigue & Injuries

Cyclists of all ages, sizes and performance levels hit the dreaded “wall” at varying points during a cycling race that can be influenced by a number of factors. In this write-up, we will look at the top ways to ensure that you have a better racing experience and avoid burning out prematurely.

Performance Check

Prior to taking part in any races, it is important to get an assessment of your performance that will not only assist you towards more effective training, but will help you avoid common injuries occurring in your feet, skeletal muscles, back, knees and other joints.

The South African Sports Science Institute has a comprehensive assessment programme which includes:
  • Testing of your maximum output levels
  • Your Vo2 max
  • Rate at which lactic acid builds up in your bloodstream
  • The ErgoFit & ErgoMax bike fitting, and;
  • A tailored bike setup based on your 7-point assessment
Eating & Energy Levels

It goes without saying that it is important to have the highest possible energy levels throughout your race in order to avoid a drop in blood-sugar levels and the onset of fatigue.

This can be achieved in various ways, but the three basic rules of thumb is effective carbohydrate loading, a good night’s rest and maintaining an energy intake throughout your race.
  • Carbohydrate loading has traditionally taken the form of dosing up on pasta and other high-carb meals over two to three days prior to your big race. The trick here is to focus on plenty of Low GI pasta and carbs the day before you race as it most effectively builds up glycogen levels in your muscles – the fastest releasing energy source in your body.
  • During your race you will want to make use of High GI, or fast-release, energy nutrition since you will be experiencing relatively high levels of intensity over a short period of time. Whether you’re using glucose gels or other carbs that are quickly absorbed, you’ll want to focus on taking them at regular intervals to avoid a sharp drop in your blood-sugar levels which can cause your energy levels to crash.
  • A good night’s sleep is important for more reasons than one as it is not only a good moral booster to wake up feeling refreshed, you will also be in a calmer state which means that your blood pressure is optimal and heart rate is running at a normal pace before and during the pedalling.
Hydration

Everybody knows that hydration is important, but few besides the professionals know exactly how to maintain a good level of hydration during a race.

There are two primary components of hydration, namely water and electrolytes. Running low on either can have detrimental consequences and your performance will drop sharply.

Before your race you will want to stock up on your body’s water supply by topping up at regular intervals to ensure optimal absorption. Avoid lots of coffee as it is a diuretic and will force water out of your system and into your bladder – in which case it is of no use here and might force you to take an unscheduled pit-stop for the loo.

You need to drink enough to match the intensity of the exercise and this can mean consumption of between one and four bottles per hour of high intensity cycling depending on your baseline level of sweating and the conditions.

You’ll want to make sure that your drink has electrolytes, which is the case with most sports energy drinks, otherwise mixing some citrus fruit juice with water and adding a teaspoon of salt will also do the trick.

Your primary focus is a regular intake of fluids which means small sips. A sip every couple of minutes to a half-hour is far more effective than a big gulp every half-hour to an hour. At this point you will be dehydrated and it is difficult to play catch-up. Rather pre-empt your body’s needs.

Pace & Grouping Up

One of the biggest mistakes many cyclists make is by not keeping a sustainable pace during a race event. Although you might be chasing for a good time, you need to remember how far you have to go and plan ahead.

If you’re riding a long distance race that has many climbs, don’t sprint unnecessarily, but rather keep a sustainable pace on the straights and reserve your energy for the climbs that tend to be quite taxing for even the most professional cyclists.

Remember to avoid slowing down or stopping as you will lose your momentum and you will require additional energy to reach your original pace once again – This tends to happen due to an early onset of fatigue and stopping at water-points.

Carrying a Camelbak and extra bottles will mean less stopping required as you should have enough hydration to carry you the full distance of the race.

For top results you’ll want to get yourself into a working group which consists of a bunch of cyclists who travel together in tight formation that rotates those in the front with those in the middle and rear of the group. The benefit of this is of course drafting, whereby those in front effectively cut the air drag factor and you can find yourself saving up to 40% of your energy. This is particularly effective when you’re facing strong head winds.

2013 Car Of The Year Shortlist

The Car of the year’ phrase was invented by Motor Trend magazine in the 1950’s for their annual award for best American automobile.

It also refers to an award given yearly to the best automobile selected by a jury of journalists from four different motor magazines in South Africa.

How does the judging process work? At the annual meeting the jury members are presented with a complete list of the finalists and the votes each car received.

A decision on how many finalists make the final testing stage is based entirely on the amount of votes received during the process.  The only discussion and debate is around the cut-off point for entries into the final stage.

During the test days, the Guild Evaluators carry out a series of dynamic and static assessments on each of the selected vehicles.

The dynamic and static evaluation takes place over the test period in a controlled environment, which is geared at testing all aspects of the vehicle including: the appearance, handling, value-for-money and aesthetics.

In order to assist the assessment process, the jury Guild members are provided with comparative informational charts drawn from the entry forms and a price list of all the cars’ parts.

There are three conditions that the judges need to adhere to when voting:
  1. The evaluators are allocated a maximum of twenty-five points to use for judging the finalists.
  2. No vehicle is allowed to be allocated more than ten points by a judge.
  3. The vehicle with the maximum amount of points at the end of the test days is deemed the winner and once the votes are counted, the outcome is final.
While many consumers are eager to find used cars deals in the market, many new car shoppers pay careful attention to the Car of the year awards to ensure they get the best value for money, so on that note who is the favourite to win this award?

In my personal opinion, I believe that the Opel Meriva is one of the top contenders for the Car of the Year award.

The Opel Meriva is a 1, 4 litre turbo-charged engine which delivers 103 kW @ in the range of 4900 – 6000 r/min with 200 Nm of torque delivered across the range of 1850-4900 r/min. This 6-speed manual transmission creates a platform to propel the Opel Meriva from 0 to 100 km/h in 10, 3 seconds with a top speed of 196 km/h.

Fuel consumption for this level of performance is a remarkably low 6, 7 l/100km for the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 196 gm/km.

The vehicles interior specs has made it a worthy Car of the Year finalist: power windows in the front and back, air-conditioning with particulate filter, follow me home lights, front and side airbags for the front seats and curtain side airbags for the rear, electronic driving aids including cruise control and a radio/CD combination with MP3 and Aux input features.

According to the GMSA’s Vice President, Malcolm Gauld:

“The guild was certainly spoilt for choice this year and we are excited by the fact that the membership has recognized the Opel Meriva Cosmo for the innovation and advanced technology that this vehicle has introduced to the small MPV market. We look forward to dynamic testing phase of the contest where we believe the excellent driving dynamics of the Opel Meriva will come to the fore.”

In conclusion, the upcoming Car of the Year test days in April 2013 promises to separate the average vehicles from the great ones.

If you cannot wait until then, drop by one of the local dealerships and test drive one of the new cars for sale in their showroom.

How To Get Investors Interested in Your Business

When starting a new business, one of the biggest problems is getting business start-up financiers to climb aboard and give your business the cash injection it needs to get off the ground.

On average, only around 5% of entrepreneurs manage to get the start-up financing they need and this is not due to them having an un-sellable idea, but rather the lack of confidence that their process and presentation has inspired.

You can start any business and sell anything you want, but the way in which you conduct business and your ability to give a knock-out presentation is of key importance.

Disaster Relief and Nanotech Water Filtration

This picture is demonstrating how nanofilters only allow extremely small particles through, while most other particles get blocked.

One of the biggest problems in the world at the moment is a massive shortage of water for human consumption (a.k.a potable water). In many disaster-stricken regions of Africa, bottled water is flown in to aid people who desperately need it, but this is very expensive and not sustainable.

“37% per cent of the developing world’s population – 2.5 billion people – lack improved sanitation facilities, and over 780 million people still use unsafe drinking water sources”, according to the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation (JMP).

Interview with Freshlyground

Freshlyground: Healing Africa with Music

By Sergio Henriques

It was a windy day in the Mother City of Cape Town and I was joined by co-founder of Biz-Genie Morné Kleinhans. We settled at Rotisserie 360 on Bree Street, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Freshlyground band members and slowly they started to appear. They were, Simon Attwell (Flautist & Saxophonist), Zolani Mahola (Lead Vocalist) and Kyla-Rose Smith (Violinist & Backing Vocalist).
For those who don’t know Freshlyground, they are an Afro-pop band consisting of 7 members. They started out in 2002 and have since released 4 albums, namely “Jika Jika”, “Ma’Cheri”, “Nomvula” and most recently, “Radio Africa”. Their music represents the voice of Africa with the use of traditional African instruments, lyrics and sounds. They also featured alongside Shakira in the making of the FIFA Soccer World Cup 2010 opening song “Waka Waka”.
Freshlyground have also won various awards, including Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2006 and Album of the Year in 2007 for “Ma’Cheri” at the annual South African Music Awards (SAMA). Kyla-Rose and Zolani also jointly won “Woman of the Year” at the Glamour Magazine 2011 Awards earlier this year.
It was particularly chilly so we huddled together outside at the corner-street restaurant and began our interview.
